Dr. Harriett Skye
Ethnic Studies
United Tribes Technical College
Dr. Harriett Skye (Lakota, Standing Rock) has a long and impressive resume. What stands out is her Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies (emphasis on Native American Studies), and a documentary film she directed. Her film, “The Right to Be,” is an autobiographical story about her journey as an American Indian woman on the pathway of self-awareness and higher education. It was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, along with other Native films in 1994. Today she is a leader, role model and mentor at United Tribes Technical College, where she is vice president of Intertribal Programs. Yet, she is filled with appreciation and gratitude for those who helped her on her educational path. She credits her success to more than just hard work and lucky breaks. She believes everyone she needed in life was put in front of her for a reason.>>More |

Stephen
Elementary Education
Oglala Lakota College
Many people consider starting college later in life. In fact, amongst tribal college students, the average student is a 27-year-old single mother of three, and is often the first in her family to attend college. These students know that they will have to juggle many responsibilities: children, work, and studies, and sometimes there isn’t enough money to meet all of their obligations.
That is where the American Indian College Fund can help. Ninety-one percent of Fund scholarship recipients are "non-traditional" students— they have dependents, are older than 24, work full-time—or a combination of these characteristics.>>More |

Dominic
Navajo
Business Administration
Haskell Indian Nations University
American Indian College Fund scholar Dominic talks about his path from his home town of Navajo, New Mexico to Haskell Indian Nations University. In 2009, Dominc’s talents helped him land a prestigious internship at Nike, where he spent the summer of 2009 working at Nike headquarters on the grass roots marketing of the N7 shoe.
Dominic has a lot of options to look forward to after graduation, but for now he is concentrating on leading the Haskell Fighting Indians team to victory on the basketball court and maintaining his 4.0 grade point average. Like so many other tribal college students, Dominic ultimately wants to use his education to help others. The Fund and our donors are honored to help Dominic achieve his goals.>>More |
